The Chopin Year celebrations commemorating the legacy of the great Polish composer and providing an excellent promotion opportunity for Poland around the world have been privileged with the patronage of
The President of Poland Lech Kaczyński
thus attaining the highest profile.
At its 35th session in October 2009, UNESCO’s General Conference approved a list of anniversaries celebrated in 2010–11 with which UNESCO will be associated. The list contains Fryderyk Chopin’s bicentenary of birth.
“UNESCO’s patronage is granted to honour figures of exceptional merit, whose accomplishments have had a global dimension and are connected with cross–cultural dialogue and international understanding. Taking into account the important role that celebrating anniversaries under UNESCO’s patronage plays in enriching and promoting the world’s cultures, we are certain that by way of these celebrations’ international character, honouring prominent figures of Polish culture by UNESCO will serve to make their legacy better known in Poland and abroad,” claimed Sławomir Ratajski, Secretary General of the Polish National Commission for UNESCO.
The Chopin Year celebrations are not only an opportunity to promote Fryderyk Chopin’s works, but also a chance to build bridges across different languages and cultures, and bringing people closer to each other by means of music – a universal form of human communication. Considering the great social and cultural significance of the event, the European Parliament decided to become a honorary patron of the Chopin Year Celebrations, as did the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Thorbjorn Jagland.
